Thanks, Dr. Lenny. To be clear, though, I haven't lost any information. The old drive is not bad, and I was able to slurp all my old files off of it easily. Also, my problems haven't originated with Kubuntu, but rather a security package for encrypting the entire drive that is somewhat unstable.
Ah, yes - security.
