Chemistry - learn it

ReadJust read where the UN is meeting next week to discuss banning 12 chemicals that are poison to the environment worldwide. I wonder - how many chemists are invited to this meeting? Most of the banned substances are highly toxic, but have specific uses that function well when treated with proper application. The mechanism works at much, much lower concentrations in biological systems that people expect, but an outright ban is ludicrous.
ReadFirst - it could never be enforced even handedly. The technical knowledge is beyond our enforcement personel and there are better things for law enforcement to be doing. Second - since these chemicals all have functional utility, there is an economic loss required to develop a product to replace their function. The replacements are worse. The list is political, and once started, will be added to in never ending fashion by bureaucracies saving us from ourselves.
ReadWhy? How much contact did you have with the freon in your refrigerator in the past 40 years? Why is asbestos a problem when solid and contained, and not a bigger problem when its ripped out and torn apart? People need to learn chemistry for themselves and not trust what they've been taught to believe by the propaganda that the chemical manufacturers spew forth. Flouride and Aluminum ions are more of an immediate human health problem that mercury. Chemical wastes are sold as manufactured products to save the cost of disposal - hence we have the agricultural fertilizer industry.
ReadDon't allow politicians to make decisions for you. Learn how chemistry works; elements, the nitrogen and water cycles, physiology, carbon chemistry. Figure out if global warming makes sense in your own terms. Then do something about it - if it's a problem.

Rural Service

ReadWalked into a barber shop as the barber is sweeping and he says he needs five more minutes to finish cleaning his shop. I head next door to the coffee shop and sit to wait. Enter a conversation with another patron, and the barber signals me that he is ready. I politely leave the conversation and walk to the barber shop where the barber has a person in the chair and another one waiting and i am third. I go back to do some other shopping and time myself for two haircuts, show up again and another patron is ahead of me. I politely thank the barber and get on with my day. I don't think i will ever do business there - he wasted an hour of my time with indignation, especially when he pointed out his policy of being in the shop to get the haircut, as I was leaving the third and last visit.

Pathways

Read.A philosophy is to a person, as a rudder is to a boat. Pathways open and close in direction because at the time, they were the right steps to take. Modern values are askew and the sense of direction, the societal boat rudder, is constantly twisted as pathways wink, open and closed.
This The path i was on has ended and the trail filled me with wonder and awe. i found the time to find myself, to discover the beauty of nature on the Umpqua and to re-learn the pain of youth. But my service is to mankind, not just to youth and so, as Frost's path not taken has now been traveled, i return to the main road refreshed, my heart light, my spirits high and with new knowledge to apply. i will continue to seek applied knowledge and wisdom.
TwiceThe word of the great non-coercives can be summed up from the 4th century Catholic church, what is to be done - change human beings and the times will be changed. However, the only person I can change is myself, by setting an example and being consistent between belief and action. For me, that is to seek truth at all depths, at all breadths, at all times, while providing mental comfort to troubled individuals as they find their new reality by traveling paths in a rapidly changing maze - modern times. As I set this example, then I may change the actions of others, non-coercively, with the power of my ship, holding the values that I share with kindred souls in a mentored learning environment.

i have grown up to I

"To be a philosopher is not merely to have subtle thoughts, nor even to found a school, but so to love wisdom as to live according to its dictates, a life of simplicity, independence, magnanimity, and trust. Earth Day 2005

ReadEarth Day has become quite the celebration - with an Energy Fair in addition to the General Fair. The UBWC booth featured a game where patrons toss rubber fish through culverts in order to see why fish have difficulty getting up streams. My favorite booth of the day was the DEQ macroinvertebrate booth - Bug Zone. On behalf of the people of Douglas County, we thank Douglas County for sponsoring the event and all the volunteers who came out and made it happen.

Salmon Art at the UVAA

ReadWasn't able to stand deep enough back to get the entire visual perspective of the clearcut trees surrounding the set, but this is the primary piece in a show of Salmon Art at the Umpqua Valley Arts Association. The 5-week show opened last night to the folk music of Laura Kemp. The show also features the underwater photography of local artist Richard Grost.

ThisThis is rural culture from the Violet Umpqua - the place where blue amerika and red amerika have beaten each other to bruise colored purple.

ERA - a Model System Structure

ReadBaseball statistics are the best numbers in the whole world. They measure performance in constant terms that delineate the play of a game in a form that allows direct comparison of eras. Eras are periods of time that only appear in retrospect. You are never part of an era when you are living and doing, only when you glance back to see how time has passed, do you recognize your role in history.
ThisERAs are reflective of how often the pitching goal is met - a 3.00 earned run average should be in the running for the season title. In a 9-inning game, that translates to success two thirds of the time. Since a .333 batting average is also darned good - the mathematics of the sport have an internal consistency second to none.
NowSo why do we allow the education system to put additional pressure upon all youth via the disservice of attempting to achieve 90% (or higher) for an 'A ' grade - when the whole process is unrealistic and just defeats psyche and willingness to contribute productively in very short order? Let's make our averages reflective of baseball averages and make kids feel good about hitting home runs, instead of being held to an unreasonable standard of inconsistant perfection!!

Science & Religious Belief

ReadIt has come to pass in terms of the lord that the pursuit of truth has become lost in the shuffle of human affairs. With complex scientific questions being debated sans factual data, the objectivity of what we have called science in the past has been compromised by the unwillingness to think outside the realm of the narrow confines handed to us by the proverbial great thinkers of past times. We must think for ourselves, and rethink the interface between how things actually work and how we currently believe they work - within the framework of our current thinking style.
ThisAs lemme howdt, doctor lenny and professor molybdo, the mollec hues and several other characters chime in on cue, father gaia will take the science of religion as the religion of science and will bring thoughts in a unique verbal code called scienceprayer. This is intended as a mathematics game with embedded philosophy and parody of life - just another in the cast of irreverent characters using the first amendment while we still can. If we get into exploring some serious issues in our haste to poke fun, then we have done some good to enlighten today's way too serious world.
